‘What A Time to be Alone' by Chidera Eggerue

This book is filled with amazing feminist artwork and spreads an important message empowering women. It reminds you that being alone is a great thing and The Slumflower's inspiring voice comes through beautifully. It's a feminist MUST READ!

‘13th’ directed by Ava DuVernay

‘13th’ begins with the alarming statistic: one in three African-American males will serve prison time at one point or another in their lives whereas only one in seventeen white men will. The documentary goes on to explain how the loophole in the 13th amendment converted slavery from a legal business model to an equally legal method of punishment for criminals. It is both shocking and angering and will make you question the respect you had for American Presidents and the country which calls itself ‘the land of the free’.

‘Pose’ created by Steven Canals, Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy

‘Pose’ is a BBC series set in 1987 New York amidst the bustling LGBTQ+ Ball culture, an underground LGBT subculture which originated in the US in which people compete in houses for glory at the events known as Balls. It tells the story of Blanca, a black transgender woman who starts her own house after leaving her previous House: House of Abundance. Houses serve as alternative families that are meant to provide shelter and safety for those who have been kicked out of their own families for being a part of the LGBTQ+ community. It is an uplifting series that follows the House of Evangelista on their journey to becoming the best house. The whole series celebrates other races and people of the LGBTQ+ community, whilst also showing the hardships and reality of the racism and transphobia people receive for being “different”.

‘Invisible Women‘ by Caroline Criado Perez

This book will open your eyes to feminist issues you had never even considered before from urban planning to emoji design to achieve its aim of “exposing the gender data gap”. If you’re looking to learn a load of facts while being unable to put a book down we highly recommend this! You are guaranteed to feel even more enraged at the way women are treated in society after reading this book and you will be able to back up all your feminist opinions with the figures it provides.

‘Cowspiracy’ directed by Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn

Cowspiracy is a Netflix documentary which explains how the factory farming of meat, eggs and dairy is destroying the earth and why major environmental groups seem to have overlooked the problem. It doesn’t really contain many graphic scenes (there are a few) but focuses largely on facts so if you want to learn about the impacts of animal agriculture watch this!

‘Explained’ created by Ezra Klein and Joe Posner

This Netflix docuseries is made up of short episodes, each about 20 minutes long, which give a brief overview of a broad range of topics ranging from the world’s water crisis and the future of meat to why women are paid less and political correctness. If you want a quick summary of a subject then this series is a great place to start and will provide you with an overview of the topic which you can then look into further.

‘Factfulness’ by Hans Rosling, Ola Rosling and Anna Rosling Rönnlund

This critically acclaimed Number 1 Sunday Times Bestseller provides “ten reasons why we’re wrong about the world - and why things are better than you think”. It shines a light on misconceptions we often believe to be true about our world and why they are not necessarily correct through an extensive supply of data and clearly written, understandable explanations. We recommend this to anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of the state of our world more generally and how we should be viewing it in a much more positive light.
